APRIL 2019

Hello Dreamers!

Happy April - spring has sprung, here's hoping pollen doesn't eat everyone and/or turn into its own sentient monstrosity.

 • CITY DEVELOPMENTS •
The sun is shining and the rainy month of March is over! There are still intermittent cloudbursts, but normal ones for this time of year. Spring fever is starting to kick in across the city with the blossoming of several flowering trees. Many of the city's residents have taken to picnicking in the countryside to blow off some steam from the long months of the wet season - there is a palpable air of both relief and optimism in the air.

There's an annual festival in the middle of the month at the Wiesen Botanical Gardens that showcases all of the plants that are greeting the spring, and the people of Aifaran make an event of it. The celebration culminates with a parade, and the float that best captures the spirit of spring wins a hefty purse of rhinn.

 • UPCOMING EVENTS •

ARCH-RIVALS   { April 8-14 }

After the arches arose from the decks of the two strange ships in the harbor last month, they've been quiet, exhibiting no other odd behavior, until suddenly on the morning of April 8th, they let out a low noise, at the very bottom edge of human hearing. Those with more sensitive ears like Arybar can hear it halfway across the city. The noise - a low, reverberating tone - lasts for one minute. Twelve hours later, it happens again, for another minute. Exactly twelve hours apart for the next few days, it happens for progressively longer periods of time - two minutes, three, five, eight, thirteen, twenty-one, thirty-four, fifty-five, eighty-nine...the final noise lasts for one hundred and forty four minutes, and causes mass headaches across the city. Some residents are so affected by the noise that they collapse.

After the very first noise, Melias can be seen sitting on top of the ship with the unfinished arch on it, inspecting it, and occasionally talking to it. If called to from the docks, she'll wave back. On the first day, she'll come to the dock and answer questions, assuring people that there's nothing to worry about. After the second day, she seems distracted, and the third day even has her looking anxious. When she leaves the ships briefly on the fifth day - April 12th - to go get food, people give her a wide berth - not just because she's been so close to the ships, but because she looks like hell. There's a clear streak of blood from a nosebleed, and her eyes are wild. If she's approached while she's briefly off the ship, she'll be short with whoever's asking her questions, and there may even be a bit of panic about her. Once the noises stop, she looks relieved more than anything, but older, somehow, and sickly.

The strange sounds have those in the Aisling tower in a tizzy. While they know the source is from the ships, the sound has also had unexpected consequences on much of the magical and organic tech. It's also had some impact on similar tech used at hospitals and government buildings in Aifaran. There are many listings to see if Dreamfolk with unique powers might be able to solve these problems.
Note: This event will have a mod-posted log available for threading.

IN BLOOM   { April 20-30 }

The Festival of Growth coming a week after the ships' odd behavior is a breather for all. As always, it proves immensely popular. Many people find the thriving, blooming botanical gardens to be romantic (some people even get married in the gardens during the festival) but it's not the sole province of lovers. The festival is full of flowers, friendship, and - of course - food. The ten-day-long festival ends on the last day of April, with a parade that snakes through the entire city, starting from uptown all the way to the botanical gardens.

The middle of the parade is when things start to go wrong. There's another noise like before, but it's brief, lasting approximately for ten seconds, and after everyone tenses up, they continue with the parade. It arrives in the gardens for the closing of the festival and the awarding of prizes, and as the Master of Ceremonies is about to announce the winning float, there's another tone, so low it vibrates people's bones and they can feel it in their chests, and it ascends to an almost shriekingly-high pitch and volume.

As suddenly as it began, it ends, and every single plant in the gardens dies.
Note: This event will not have a mod-posted log available for threading.

Plotting for Nita!

Definitely having her pick up on that noise also that Fibonacci sequence, what?

And training her Talent may still become a thing.

As for Affinities:

JUSTICE, RANK 5
Tell Us More: The Sentry is always interested in improving their methods, whether through technology or process. They want to interview you about the situation in your world, and perhaps implement something that sounds useful, with your initial guidance of course.

(Nita will definitely have suggestions - assuming the mun can remember them. |D)

CRIME, RANK 2
Garish Graffiti: Some bored street urchins paint vulgar words and pictures on the front of one of your preferred places of patronage, and if you happen to catch them in the act they'll paint you. They race off before the Sentry can catch them, but you fall under suspicion of committing the act since you're literally red-handed.

(In b4 Nita tries for intimidation by talking the paint right off her. May even have her track the can source...)

FAITH/TURTLES, RANK 3
Doubt.jpg: Something you said made a member of Ban Om question their own faith. For a time they were angry with you, giving you nasty looks whenever you crossed paths. Though after a week's time they leave you a note of which the gist is basically the doubt you instilled in them allowed them to think more deeply about what they believed, sought answers, and managed to strengthen their convictions. There's a pretty tortoiseshell hairpin in the envelope as a gift.
Daisy-Chaining: The Sabonile are very fond of the Festival of Growth, and can be seen in the streets offering to bless people with hand-woven crowns and necklaces of flowers for a small donation. If you opt for one of them, you'll feel buoyed by a general feeling of goodwill until the flowers die, which usually takes a day or two. Even when the flowers have dried out, they still look pretty, and if you continue to wear them around, Sabonile will look at you with approval.

(Nita will probably end up doing both of these, tbh.)

COMMERCE, RANK 1
The Dreaming Ate My Paycheck: The Dreaming giveth, and the Dreaming taketh away, and lately it's been doing a lot of back and forth. A good chunk of change disappears from your pocket almost as soon as you drop it in there, not even giving a thief the time to have been responsible. In its place you pull out what appear to be dog biscuits.

(If I make a log this month, this one will absolutely be included as a prompt, because we have a winner here, folks. Can never go wrong with dog biscuits. Also Nita can continue to miss home.)

ARTS, RANK 2
Garland Gas: The floral decorations are really beautiful this time of year - unfortunately there are some that cause unique allergies. Including constant belching. Fortunately it's only embarrassing, not life-threatening.

(... Oh no.)

SCI-TECH, RANK 4
Sound Dampening: Although the strange tones reverberating around the city don't seem to be stopped by walls, better sound dampening materials at least cut through the worst of it. Your residence or preferred place of patronage receives a low-cost upgrade to provide some relief.
Putting Roots in History: You happen to be nearby the Wiosen Botanical Gardens or assisting someone with a small task there, and it turns out that person is a botanist. In thanks, they've decided to name a new cultivar of flower after you! (Hopefully it didn't go extinct in the mass die-off).

(I'll do both of these, I think. That second one in particular sounds very touching for Nita.)

META, RANK 3
Bad Vibes: The strange noises coming from the ships have caused some amplification of phobias. That spider sure is looking at you awfully crooked now isn't it?
Stream of Conscious: It's natural to think about a lot of things all at once, especially when you're stressed. It's less natural for all those thoughts to literally spill out your ears like water.

(One: Poor Nita and her old fear of heights... also the dark, and the things that dwelled there when she was little. /cough.
Two: I HAVE to do this one. No doubt about it.)

We can still tag into the event from last month, right?

RL kind of did me in last month.

Due to her ties and sensitivity to the Death Plane and death magic, would Valdis feel anything unusual regarding the death of the plants?

Similar to the above, is there anything about this that should be pinging Nita as a wizard, considering she's been visiting the boats frequently? (Not that talking's gotten her much of anywhere, it means she knows their 'feel' as inanimate life.)

Follow-up questions! =D

[personal profile] unfavorableinstigation 2019-04-10 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
As of the new log going up, Nita is now pursuing two new avenues:

1. Walking around with a TRP and trying to both understand what it's reading for and, if possible, augment it.

2. Asking after the new fissures in the ground, citing how resonance can make even the earth crack if the right frequency is reached.

Will either of these have significant impact in Aifaran?

Follow up, but unrelated, question. Are the ships sentient enough that Valdis could soul walk or use empathy with them?

Another question relating to the death of the plant.

Sheena is always aware of the Spirits as she can sense their mana, and sometimes, they appear before her without her calling for them.

Would her connection to Gnome, the Earth Spirit, allow her to feel a faint disturbance of any kind?
