August-September Mission | OOC

NOTHING BESIDE REMAINS: A CITY CONSUMED

Hello Dreamers!

Here's what you may have been waiting for: details on the upcoming mission. We have taken into account feedback from the game HMD, and we've put together something a little more streamlined which we hope you'll enjoy.

As a first matter of business, we are amending the dates a little. Signups will be now be open from the 16th to the 25th, to allow newcomers from the most recent app cycle to sign up as well. Please be sure to sign up before then, as latecomers will not be permissible. To sign up, comment to a header below for the tower you or your character are interested in. Come with friends or participate in the age-old tradition of awkward glances to your side and random selection by teacher mod!

This mission will run from August 25 - September 13, and will qualify for AC Exemptions. Please see the Activity Requirements page for details on this if you have questions.

As a reminder, here is what we had to say about this month's mission on the agenda:

The shunt, when it appears, is immediately obvious. There are silver towers, reaching skyward and glinting brightly in the sun -- where the rays can reach them, through the thick twining cover of green vines and branches. Closer it is evident there are three, all interconnected, and a smattering of smaller buildings spreading out beside -- some few of these have been bisected in their arrival.

To certain Dreamfolk, it will be very obvious that these are skyscrapers, not simply any tower. But overgrown ones; these have clearly not seen the touch of people, or pruners, in tens of years at least.

A scouting mission is immediately arranged to track the bounds of the shunt, and assess the potential. Shortly after, word goes out for volunteers for a recovery mission. It is noted that the place appears largely abandoned, but technologically advanced. The plants don't appear hostile yet, but certain pessimistic minds are of the opinion it's only a matter of time. The shunt surely doesn't seem to have impeded their growth, and they're quite happy to overgrow anything, given enough time.

There will naturally be more information when the IC post goes up. For now, here's what the scouts will bring back, and the information your characters will have available on which to base their decisions:

  • Tower 1, the easternmost, has what looks like defunct automata visible from the ground-level door. The glass may need to be broken to get in, as the door and entryway have remained untouched and fairly locked, but it's anticipated this tower will have some significant hi-tech items to salvage.

  • Tower 2, the southernmost, has a reception desk visible from the entrance. The door hangs open, and the scouts have been able to slip a little further in safely. The plants have had some love with this tower in a serious way, and the leaves are rich and green and the vines determined and plump. Bring a machete.

  • Tower 3, the westernmost, has an entryway that is all shattered glass and twisted metal. Foliage is present but not nearly so enthusiastic as in the southern tower. Nothing else is immediately evident: the stairs further in are blocked by a heavy metal door that seems to require some kind of access pass, judging by the scanner at the left. This may need some electronic expertise or other workaround.

  • The areas around the bases of the tower are mostly deserted, and there is not much of worth to salvage that the scouts have not already snagged.

  • Bridges are visible between the towers as one looks up them. While accessibility can't be determined from ground level, it seems like choosing one tower won't necessarily mean you can't look at the others.

OOCly, here's how a lot of this will work:

  • There will be three 'stages' of progression available to each group, roughly correlating to tower ascension. Stages are unique to a group, not to a tower. There are multiple possible stages per tower, and what your characters run into in higher stages will be affected by what happens in lower stages. If your groups opt to change towers, this means your group may be stuck with someone else's bad choices! Good luck.

  • This time, we're limiting groups to three characters per starting group maximum. This is to keep tagging and decisions and negotiating a little easier. However, owing to the structure of the three towers, if your characters want to split up and rearrange their groups, this is fine. All we require is that you label the new stage's thread header clearly with the tower and group participants. Groups should be kept to four characters at a maximum after rearrangement. Mission setup may not always allow for this, depending on locale and scenario, but when we can offer it plausibly, we will.

  • We know it can be hard to actually finish finish threads, especially when it's a group thread! So, we will not require a formal finish to each stage's threads. We would like to see a minimum of four comments per character demonstrating progression toward a goal. At that point, you can comment with your group's discussed ooc plans to a header we have set up for this purpose, and we'll direct your next stage accordingly.

  • We have had some feedback regarding the limited nature of previous options. For this mission, what we intend to do is offer suggestions: that is, we will offer two to three options we see as being likely choices in a given situation, but your characters are not bound to those and may opt to mix and match or do something different. Naturally, of course, splitting the party means your odds of success go down!

  • On that note, we are introducing risk. In this case, the higher the stage, the higher the risk will be! This is a concrete manifestation of ICA=ICC. Stage 3 may go so far as serious injury or temporary death if your characters make exceptional choices; or, you may be rewarded vastly. We will be as transparent as we can about the risk level, and please also note that backing out is also an option. The information and items found at stages 1 and 2 will be interesting and rewarding - so don't feel like you have to go all out in order to get any plot or progress!

    • If you have questions or concerns about this, please feel free to address them to us under the Questions header below.

ICly, would characters volunteer for the mission and then get randomly assigned into groups? Or would they decide their groups for themselves? Or both?

question!!

[personal profile] afoolsgold 2018-08-17 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
hello!! are all the groups tackling the towers guaranteed to stay independent of each other in their exploration? Or can they be ensured to remain independent? only asking because I want to limit the chances of my characters bumping into each other if they both end up in teams exploring the same tower.

new arrivals question!

Will the new arrivals thread have a modded plot component? If not, can the new arrivals join another group later on, or can we sign them up belatedly for one of the unclaimed exploration plots?
