SEPTEMBER 2018

Hello Dreamers!

We hope everyone is enjoying the ongoing mission, and we're excited to see what your characters choose to do. There is still plenty of time to explore the towers and weigh the risks before you. Keep it up!

 • CITY DEVELOPMENTS •
The days continue to be hot, but nights bring cooler temperatures and the storm bursts from last month have abated. Clear skies persist over the city, which alleviates some of the worries about the latest shunt mission. However, the direct view of the azure sky also makes it possible to view a strange ripple effect on the barrier surrounding the archipelago that continues through the second week of September.

This month is also… noisy. It's gyroshei mating season, and these massive birds are trekking far and wide to collect decorations for their nests. While they usually nest on the far northern side of the archipelago, the gyroshei can have twenty-foot wingspans and crossing the main island is no trouble. They're bold, too, and have no restraint about poking heads into windows to snatch food or anything shiny to take back to their nests. Fortunately, the gyroshei are not a numerous species, so only a dozen of the birds - both male and female - pester Aifaran throughout the month. They're not aggressive, but they will hold on tightly to something they wish to harvest, and they're quite strong. Good luck if they make off with your silverware.

 • JOB OPENINGS •
Aifaran's economy has strong pillars in both monetary and barter systems for work, and as such there are always a wealth of opportunities for temporary work both inside the city and in other locations around the archipelago. While these positions are not strictly geared toward Dreamfolk, and anyone can take them up regardless of whether they already have steady employment elsewhere or not, new Dreamfolk in particular find them helpful to help get their feet under them. Some of this month's temporary work positions are:

GYROSHEI GUARD - Calling all bird-lovers? Or haters, depending on your perspective. Help is needed to minimize what the gyroshei can make off with and ensure that no one is hurt, including the birds. Those with any large animal handling experience are especially desired to help shepherd the creatures out of the city as quickly as possible. The pay for this job is commensurate with the difficulty of the task, and you'll go home with a decent chunk of change.

CANVASSER - Aifaran is home to a number of civil society organizations that take on campaigns and other actions for a variety of causes. One of the larger organizations dedicated to protecting coastal wetlands is hiring canvassers for the month to inform people on the streets about their latest campaign. It's hard work, but you'll get to meet a lot of new people!

THEATRE CRIER - A new theatre production is about to open, and the producers want to build up the hype and spread the word! It seems like it's a Ioduese adaptation of a lost work of Shakespeare, which could be really great or a complete flop. Here, take these fliers, and don't come back here with them still in hand.

 • UPCOMING EVENTS •

MISSION WRAP-UP   { September 1 - 13 }

The latest shunt has been thoroughly investigated by Dreamfolk, the Verdant Sentry, researchers, and probably a handful of scrap-haulers and black market dealers. No stone is left unturned, and the chunk of overgrown city graciously stays put through the beginning of September. A few enthusiastic researchers are overheard chattering excitedly about a wildlife discovery made in one of the upper floors of a tower once the lower levels were secured. They seem to have found a whole passel of creatures that are, well, cute. If asked, they will only say the creatures are in quarantine and being assessed for health before they can share any more.

Day by day, the Sentry becomes proportionally more apprehensive of its imminent disappearance, and by the end of the first week they have ordered a complete evacuation and increased patrols around the island - at a safe distance, of course, which could allow those willing to take the risk to slip through their nets.

During the second week of September, the shunt vanishes as abruptly as it arrived. The ocean rushes into the space it occupied, and soon there is nothing but turbid water and a few wilted leaves remaining to signal anything was amiss. The Sentry and researchers then begin the task of sorting through and analyzing data and salvage, which promises to be a rich enterprise. Dreamfolk involved in the mission will be called upon to provide reports of their activities and any salvage they took - though they would be hard-pressed to prove something was taken if no one speaks up about it. The chief would really love to make sure there isn't anything dangerous loose in the city, however, so eyes may be on you if you raise suspicion.

Note: This event will not have a mod-posted log available for threading.

RIPPLES ON THE WATER   { September 15 - 30 }

After Aly and Rutile's quest to investigate the barrier that protects the archipelago, the barrier becomes more noticeably shimmery at the start of the month. By mid-month, however, things are no longer soap bubbles and sunshine. Abruptly, large ripples seem to appear in the magical shield, causing worry across the city. The experts at the Aisling Tower and everyone involved with the barrier's maintenance issues statements to assuage people's fears, but it only mitigates them for a short time.

A few days later, a shadowy projection of the Night Fisher is thrown onto the barrier. It lasts for less than thirty seconds, but it sends a wave of panic through Aifaran and the city streets quickly empty. Around the same time, a chunk of the coral off Shuyul Bay that extends beyond the barrier suddenly and mysteriously dies off. Dreamfolk - and a select number of others - experience ominous visions at the end of the month. Another peculiar side effect of the anomalies with the barrier is something physicians are calling 'Dreaming Sickness'. Those afflicted will have trouble distinguishing dreams from reality or have waking dreams that partially manifest.

The city holds its breath.

afoolsgold: (disney prinxe)

question!!

re: the Fool's attempt to commune with the turtle last month and the dreams we discussed he'd have afterwards--how would this month's event impact that?
rutility: (push)

another question!!

[personal profile] rutility 2018-09-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Given that the gyroshei love bright shiny things and are quite large, and that Rutile is bright and shiny and is *definitely* going to volunteer for the gyroshei guard... what would the consequences be of one getting overexcited and carrying Rutile off? (and is this a realistic scenario?)

I'd love to play it out and I'm happy if they like, are quickly dropped and break on the pavement or something, but I also want to know if you have any specifics in mind. (Those birds probably won't get far with them; Rutile's a bitch to catch.)

Input would be super appreciated!
