FEBRUARY 2019

Hello Dreamers!

We have a lot of events for you in February, including a player plot and a new mission! The city is still recovering from Xi Tianlong and likely will be dealing with the consequences for several months. Keep an eye out for developments of these impacts.

 • CITY DEVELOPMENTS •
The clean-up and reconstruction of Aifaran continues well into February, though now it's mostly just reconstruction. The weather is balmy, much to the relief of the city that is still largely without homes. There is much debate about what to do with the trees that sprang up in the wake of the storm - much is still unknown over whether or not they may prove a danger to the city as a whole or not. Much of these discussions are happening at the Aisling Tower and there is the occasional open forum in which city folk may give their own input and experiences.

While the Alliance has contingency plans for natural disasters, resources are somewhat strained. Of greatest concern is maintaining adequate food supplies. The Arybar responsible for overseeing agriculture and livestock rearing do not anticipate any serious shortages, but things will have to be carefully managed. They emphasize that greenhouse and hydroponic systems will be critical over the next few months as they address the issues of some heavily flooded fields. Not all were washed out, thankfully, but it's a big dent. The Alliance legislature responds to this report with proposals to prevent price-gouging and ensure equitable distribution.

Portions of the Skyway re-open by the end of the month at limited capacity, but the grove of lightning trees embedded in the tracks remains sequestered under tents and tarps. That section of the Skyway remains full closed, and city officials are mum on the subject.

 • JOB OPENINGS •
Aifaran's economy has strong pillars in both monetary and barter systems for work, and as such there are always a wealth of opportunities for temporary work both inside the city and in other locations around the archipelago. While these positions are not strictly geared toward Dreamfolk, and anyone can take them up regardless of whether they already have steady employment elsewhere or not, new Dreamfolk in particular find them helpful to help get their feet under them. Some of this month's temporary work positions are:

SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS - With so many people still displaced, support volunteers continue to be in high demand.Those who are willing to house and feed up to four individuals are requested by city officials in charge of disaster response. You'll be given a small stipend to help defray any costs of putting up refugees; it's not enough to cover everything, but it's what can be provided given the broad impacts of the disaster.

RENT-A-GUARD - It's hard to secure one's belongings when there's a hole in the side of your building, or when there are hills of debris laying around the city. There is a need for individuals willing to stand guard to watch over people's homes and businesses, as well as to help the city keep an eye on the piles of scrap and rubble that will take time to sort through for recycling. You don't need to be particularly buff or good at fighting, though that's a plus. Mostly you'll be standing around and glaring menacingly at anyone who might try to make off with something, and call the Sentry if an attempt is made.

URBAN FARMERS - In order to help create a buffer in the food supply, assistance is needed to ramp up hydroponic and greenhouse production. Little to no experience with gardening or farming is needed (though it doesn't hurt). You'll be helping put together new hydroponic towers and associated water lines, planting seeds in trays, constructing simple tables and plant beds for the greenhouses, and so on. You'll receive a small stipend, and potentially get a hydroponic tower or two in your residence!

 • UPCOMING EVENTS •

A CITY UNDAUNTED   { Throughout February }

Ongoing storm recovery continues steadily, with signs of life returning to normal emerging in some areas of the archipelago. Shops slowly begin to open in the least-affected areas of Aifaran. They're primarily places that sell food and other goods that are in significant need at the moment. A good number of people are able to return to their homes, reducing the stress on the shelters and city resources.

Melias remains in Aifaran, regularly conversing with people to learn more detail about the current state of the Alliance and the events of the storm. Any Dreamfolk willing to tell her more about their worlds or curious about the Watchers can visit her for a chat. Now that the most critical disaster response period has passed, Melias requests to spend time at the Opara Core. The engineers and techs there are still quite busy, but she ends up shadowing one of the mid-level directors for over a week. Her two escort ships remain unmoving and unanchored in the harbor.

Rather abruptly, the handful of buildings in Aifaran that had remained stubbornly flooded empty of water. The water does not suddenly remember it is subject to gravity and drain out into the streets, however. It simply vanishes. Inside, everything is drenched, but not in the way one would expect after over a month of being completely submerged. Paper is sodden without disintegrating, fabric is undamaged- even food doesn't appear to be spoiled. Here and there, furniture and loose objects will have been moved but overall nothing has been displaced. The smell of sea salt - and, oddly, jasmine - hangs in the air. It only takes about a week for the drowned buildings to fully dry out, leaving residents and owners only that lingering scent and too many unanswered questions. The Sentry declares them safe enough, though researchers delay people from returning for another week while they do some tests.

As a mark of shared determination and camaraderie, the city council announces that Tine's Commemoration will be held despite the lingering effects of Xi Tianlong's claws. In fact, a prominent guild of merchants in Malimo have stepped forward as official sponsors. Tine's Commemoration is a somewhat literal twist on the traditions of many Dreamfolk: rather than featuring a romantic holiday, February is a time dedicated to renewing and recognizing friendships, forgiving past grievances, and recognizing our most important ties through an exchange of intricately tied knots. This year will feature special knots dedicated to those who died during the storm, and those who are still missing.
Note: This event will have a mod-posted log available for threading.

TO THE WATERS AND THE WILD   { Feb 7 - 16 }

Although most of the Ioduan Academy central campus experienced minimal damage during Xi Tianlong, not all libraries throughout the city were so lucky. One closest to the waterfront suffered significant flooding, and many of the books were lost. Some, it seems, may have been lost to the Dreaming, unleashing fairy tales of all types and traditions upon the city. Dreamfolk (and some natives especially sensitive to that fickle plane) begin to play out these tales as they go about their lives, even as they begin to notice something is seriously off.
Note: This event is opt-in and may have a player-posted log available for threading. There will be an OOC sign-up and planning post.

MISSION: THE SHADOW OF THE DRAGON   { Feb 15 - 28 }

By mid-month, rumors begin to spread about the fate of Cape Averi. Although there is no official announcement about what happened there, tidbits of information begin to float around like a cloud of disjointed gnats. Some theories are simply wild (the Night Fisher ate the outpost. The whole outpost.) but others have a ring of worrying plausibility regarding an incursion. The Sentry will not respond to questions about the events at the Cape, claiming an ongoing investigation.

Days later, a fire starts at city hall, quickly determined to be arson. Witnesses describe someone wearing a military uniform hurrying away from the scene. Odder still - an ill-fitting one. It's probably safe to say that whoever started the fire isn't a member of the military at all.
Note: This event will have a mod-posted log available for threading.

This month's Wanted Character Request Comment is LOCATED HERE.

 • OOC INFO & MOD NOTES •
February Mission Sign-Ups
This mission will feature the mechanics change we mentioned in December. An OOC post will go up explaining the details of the event on February 8 with sign-ups for individual players to lead one or more specific quests or mini-plots within the broader plot we have planned. The player(s) who sign up as leaders will OOCly be given all the things that needed to be uncovered IC, and will be able to direct the gameplay within their thread(s) that way.

Use this post for plotty purposes if you'd like, brainstorm what your character might be interested in doing, laugh over your affinity ranks, anything you want - this post is yours!

Okay. Sheena has been having some real STRONG feelings of deja vu here. The storm damage reminds her of what was shown in Keeliai oh so long ago, and now the farming...

So, would she be able to offer Gnome and Undine up to help with the farming? Or is that cheating? :D

Yes!

And I have no problems with limiting Gnome's powers. I did it before, and this time, it can be stated that he's being careful because of what he faced last time.

Undine can most certainly redirect the water for them. :D

As for paying...Sheena won't ask for payment, though for some reason, I can see them sneaking money to her some way. LOL

That does help, yes! =)

I'll keep it in mind as the thread goes on; Nita and Trahearne may or may not meet in person, at least in that post.

February Debut!

Or: Nita's going to be very busy settling in this month... here are the log prompts I was thinking of for her! (Skipping Justice and Arts this time.)

CRIME RANK 2
• Oh God, Youths!: Aww, look at the kids! Wait. Wait, that’s not so cute...you’re swarmed by a group of street kids, and they nab about half the money you’re carrying, and/or something small of import. If you chase them down, though, prepare to look like the bad guy. They’re just kids!

Someone might want to help Nita. XD

FAITH RANK 3
• Pricey Divination: A fortune-teller in the street says they saw you in a vision, and he has life-changing information for you. It'll cost you a crescent rhinn, about $20, though.
• Visit-The-Infidel-With-Explanatory-Pamphlets: A representative of a faith group approaches you and tries to engage you in enthusiastic conversation, in the hopes to secure a promise of attendance at a gathering or interest you in joining the flock. If you shake them off, they'll pop up again on several other days in an attempt to persuade you.

I'm thinking Nita getting into an argument with the fortune teller, if someone wants to popcorn-gif be a witness to that fight?

COMMERCE RANK 2
• Third Hand’s Third Hand Store: You wander into a dingy-looking store - mistakenly or on purpose, that's up to you! - that sells knick knacks, junk, and other random items. Whether you find an item you like or not, the owner refuses to let you leave until you buy something.
• Rosemary and Thyme: A friendly acquaintance of yours among the native neighbors asked you to help them find something, but everywhere you ask, people stare at you like you're joking, or laugh politely. It's going to take some length of runaround before someone gently tells you it's an impossible item in their culture.

It's a toss-up as to which would be funnier given her canon (either she can't shake the suspicion a Manual is hidden in the shop, or something doesn't translate through the Speech and Nita gets mad at herself), but having anyone come across her in either scenario would be fun!

SCI-TECH RANK 4
• Hydroponic Bounty: You must look like you enjoy plants, because a woman who oversees hydroponic farming and research has just recruited you to test one of her new in-home units. You can eat what you grow and even keep the setup as long as you give her occasional updates; she'll be disappointed if you say no, but she understands if you have a black thumb.
• Power Up: Your residence or one of the places you frequent not only has power restored this month, but it's gotten some free upgrades to the wiring! That'll keep things more stable moving forward, not to mention safer in the case of any emergencies.

Definitely going for the first prompt, here, because that is 1000% something Nita would be good at. Opposite of a black thumb, this one!

META RANK 4
• Woven Words: A kindly little old lady teaches you a special knot for the Tine Commemoration wherein you weave your very voice into the cords, that it might always reach the person you give it to. Oddly enough, it works.

This is also something that echoes with canon, and is hilarious because of it. ... Nita might try and show the lady something in turn, though that may or may not be a smart idea.
