AUGUST 2018

Hello Dreamers!

A couple of big events in August, including our first player-run event! Another big development on the OOC front is that Li will be stepping down as a mod as she detailed in this post. Please give her a warm thank you for all the hard work she's done. Both Tu Shanshu and Khu Ioduan would not be the games they are without her incredible effort (and fantastic coding and organizing).

 • CITY DEVELOPMENTS •
The heatwave from July persists, along with the perpetual fog, into August, beating down on Aifaran with only mild sea breezes to break up the muggy air. In the last week of the month, just as a new shunt is reported by the Sentry, storms roll in off the ocean. The first of them is a massive thunderstorm that pelts the city with fat raindrops that fall for hours and features a truly spectacular lightning show that's visible from the coast or piers. Afterwards, temperatures become more moderate and short bursts of rain are common. Storms may last only five minutes before moving on, and may return to the exact same spot for a few days straight. And despite relatively warm temperatures, people keep talking about a chill in the air.

The sinister shadows that followed temporary visitors last month have not improved the general wariness of Dreamfolk in the city. The persistent and oppressive heat occasionally leads to a flare of tempers, and a few minor squabbles break out. Dreamfolk aren't targeted by any means; some of these scuffles are between native residents getting riled up over who is responsible for the strange events of late. This eases some with the bevy of de-aged Dreamfolk that remind the city they are at the whim of the Dreaming, too.

 • JOB OPENINGS •
Aifaran's economy has strong pillars in both monetary and barter systems for work, and as such there are always a wealth of opportunities for temporary work both inside the city and in other locations around the archipelago. While these positions are not strictly geared toward Dreamfolk, and anyone can take them up regardless of whether they already have steady employment elsewhere or not, new Dreamfolk in particular find them helpful to help get their feet under them. Some of this month's temporary work positions are:

BABYSITTER - Not all of the de-aged Dreamfolk have competent caretakers to look after them, so the Dreaming Bridge puts out a call for babysitters. This means wrangling up to two Dreamfolk children who may or may not have powers and almost certainly come with a stubborn streak. For those Dreamkids who are particularly troublesome, you'll get a little extra hazard pay. It could be fun, or it could involve getting your hair singed.

REPAIRS AND CLEANUP - In weather this hot, climate control is a must - and sometimes the air conditioning breaks down. Anyone with sufficient mechanical skill to repair air conditioning or fans on demand would be rewarded well. Once the rains start hitting the city, there are instances of minor flooding (especially in basements) and help is needed to mend leaks or clean out ruined possessions.

BAKING ASSISTANT - A Lae Shunjai producer is piloting a baking competition show, and needs extra hands to help pull it off. If you know your way around a kitchen, you'll be tasked with making decorations and frosting things and maybe if you have a little extra skill they'll even let you follow a recipe. You won't get paid much, but you'll get free pastries!

 • UPCOMING EVENTS •

TO BE A CHILD AGAIN   { August 8 - 14 }

The influx and departure of temporary Dreamfolk has a tendency to create ripple effects in the Dreaming. About a week after the shadow-tagged individuals disappear, Dreamfolk wake up… younger. Much younger - ten years old at most. Many report that they do not recall anything that happens after their visible age, although they seem to know where they are and who they've seen in Aifaran before. Sometimes this is very clear, and sometimes it's only vague feelings and knowledge that arise. And, mysteriously, not all Dreamfolk are affected. There's no rhyme or reason to who becomes pint-sized and who doesn't. Just as suddenly, after about a week everyone is their proper age again.

OOC Note: This is an opt-in player plot. There will be an OOC post by Kalineh detailing the event.

Note: This event will not have a mod-posted log available for threading.

MISSION: A CITY CONSUMED   { August 22 - September 10 }

The shunt, when it appears, is immediately obvious. There are silver towers, reaching skyward and glinting brightly in the sun -- where the rays can reach them, through the thick twining cover of green vines and branches. Closer it is evident there are three, all interconnected, and a smattering of smaller buildings spreading out beside -- some few of these have been bisected in their arrival.

To certain Dreamfolk, it will be very obvious that these are skyscrapers, not simply any tower. But overgrown ones; these have clearly not seen the touch of people, or pruners, in tens of years at least.

A scouting mission is immediately arranged to track the bounds of the shunt, and assess the potential. Shortly after, word goes out for volunteers for a recovery mission. It is noted that the place appears largely abandoned, but technologically advanced. The plants don't appear hostile yet, but certain pessimistic minds are of the opinion it's only a matter of time. The shunt surely doesn't seem to have impeded their growth, and they're quite happy to overgrow anything, given enough time.

OOC notes: Missions are back! We've taken everyone's feedback into account and continue to work at fine-tuning this system. Further details on this event will be in the info post going up later this month, so please watch for that.

Note: This event will have a mod-posted log available for threading. Mission signups will be open from August 16 - August 22.

 • AFFINITY RANKS •
Remember to check out your character's AFFINITY RANK for the various areas of repute within the city!

This month's Affinity Activities can be found LOCATED HERE.

 • OOC INFO & MOD NOTES •
4th Wall Wrap-up
We would like to give a huge thanks to everyone who participated in our first 4th Wall event! Posting access will be maintained for any guest characters up until August 8th, to allow any threads still being played out to finish up. However, we do request that no 4th wall characters tag any posts dated August 1st and onward, as ICly their characters would have left the city by that point.

We hope you have enjoyed the visit, and if you'd like to make your stay more permanent, join us at the Applications page!

Mission Sign-ups
Sign-ups for the mission teams and initial event info will be posted August 16, one week before the IC log. Sign-ups will close on August 22, so please be sure to keep an eye out for the OOC post and ensure your character(s) are signed up on time if you want them to participate!

Use this post for plotty purposes if you'd like, brainstorm what your character might be interested in doing, laugh over your affinity ranks, anything you want - this post is yours!
