Agenda | May 2018
✽ MAY 2018 Hello Dreamers! Here is what we've got planned for May 2018. Don't forget to read the last section at the end of the post for OOC updates too! • CITY DEVELOPMENTS • The first part of the month sees the last vestigates of the rainy period, and as mid-month approaches, the rains return to their normal frequency. In their wake, many seasonal plants and flowers begin reproducing in earnest, and if you ever wondered whether you were allergic to otherworldly pollen, you're about to find out (spoilers: a fairly high percentage of the population seems to be...) Beyond that, the weather is temperate and pleasantly warm, with cooler (but not uncomfortably so) evenings. Things are hectic in Aifaran this month. The last few stragglers of the Bresilykians are headed on their voyage home, but even more exciting is utterings of the Talent Tourney. Curious newcomers can learn that the tourney is a chance for magic users of all types to show of their skills in various ways. Advertisements are all over the city and billboards boast a number of flyers for study groups for different schools of magic. Garlands of flowers decorate lamp posts and shop windows, coming in five different colours to represent the five schools (blue for illusion, purple for conjuration, red for destruction, white for restoration and gold for alteration). There are also a number of flags coming in a number of these colours or combination of colours for fans of the Tourney to show where their support lies. With all the talk of magic in the air, it’s no surprise that the Dreaming is a bit overactive - Dreamfolk may find their current possessions or items from their world to have something subtly… off about them. Photographs may seem subtly distorted, clothes that once fit like a glove may seem too loose or too tight, possessions may not work correctly, or maybe too correctly, such as the yimo finishing your sentences for you in a post. Still, with so much going on in the city, no one has time to pay much mind to harmless Dreaming nonsense, right? • JOB OPENINGS • Aifaran's economy has strong pillars in both monetary and barter systems for work, and as such there are always a wealth of opportunities for temporary work both inside the city and in other locations around the archipelago. While these positions are not strictly geared toward Dreamfolk, and anyone can take them up regardless of whether they already have steady employment elsewhere or not, new Dreamfolk in particular find them helpful to help get their feet under them. Some of this month's temporary work positions are: Bibiru Sitter - A small, privately run ‘Bibiru Sanctuary’, or more accurately, ‘old lady’s flat where she hoards bibirus’ is looking for sitters for around-the-clock care. Duties include feeding the animals, making sure things stay clean, and the little bunny birds get plenty of exercise. Informant and Petty Bounty Hunter - With the space parasites spreading like lice, a number of snake oil salesmen have cropped up with tinctures and tonics that can actually be quite poisonous to many of Aifaran’s inhabitants. The Sentry has asked people to be on their guard for these charlatans and have offered monetary rewards for bringing in some of the more notorious. Clark Keebler is one of the more well-known of these clerks of counterfeit cures - one of the Dreamfolk who arrived about ten years ago and has a nasty habit of rearing his head around these kinds of crises, like a fungus emerging after a long rain. Event Organization - People with a reasonable grasp of logistics and organization, and also the willingness to fetch and carry and generally do a lot of the stuff no one else wants to do, are being recruited to help with a large event next month. They're trying to be secretive about it, but-- who're they kidding, it's the Talent Tourney. Hectic, but good for getting to know the Talented, and you'll probably get great advice. Does not pay a lot. • UPCOMING EVENTS • ✽ SPACE SICKNESS { May 3 } Those who were involved with the Shunt mission and anyone exposed directly to the Corfuhl in the first week or so of being in Aifaran are beginning to get sick. Symptoms range from intense paranoia to hallucinations, typically of loved ones who have died (like the mother in the rescue mission) but sometimes also seeing strange spindly figures and hearing a low, monotonous hum. The source is eventually identified as a meteor that struck the Corfuhl ship carrying Space Parasites that medical experts hope to have resolved by the end of the month. These creatures are tiny, almost microscopic, and spread mostly by contact. They’re not difficult to get rid of though; they need a special bath/wash liquid to kill them. Dreamfolk who has background in infectious entities or microbial entities, along with general healthcare experience, would have their inputs appreciated. All members of the Shunt mission are to be screened and asked about who they last had contact with. Any who have been affected are given a vaccination, and told to seek medical help if they experience repeat symptoms or see someone experiencing the symptoms. Note: This event will have a mod-posted log available for threading. ✽ SHIPS IN THE NIGHT { May 9th & May 13th } During a routine patrol during the first week of May, the Sentry Naval vessel Narrakra fails to return from its assigned course, and although the Sentry tries to keep it quiet while they do some preliminary investigations, rumours begin to swirl. On May 9th, the Sentry commissioner makes a formal announcement that the Narrakra is listed as a missing ship. What's interesting (although the announcement doesn't use that term, for obvious reasons) is that all Naval vessels have Shunt-detecting equipment on board, since part of their duty is to locate and catalogue the Dreaming anomalies - so it's highly unlikely that they could have sailed unknowingly into one. Not impossible, but unlikely. In the same vein, no communication was received in Aifaran by any of the receiving stations set around the archipelago which would indicate that the Narrakra ran into any trouble, be it Chihuelan ships or weather-related difficulties. It's as if the ship simply vanished from existence. However on May 13th, fishermen along the northern edge of the archipelago discover a battered lifeboat from the Narrakra washed up along the shoreline. Its sole occupant is not one of the crew however-- but Ssenast, the missing Kin'nal girl who disappeared during the Moon and Mirrors event back in January, and part of whose dress was found floating without explanation outside the barrier in early February. After reuniting her with her tearfully grateful and relieved family, the Sentry questions her only to learn that she knows nothing about the Narrakra, nor how she came to be floating on the lifeboat. Note: This event will not have a mod-posted log. ✽ TALENT TOURNEY TREPIDATION { Ongoing } There's a hubbub starting to rise up in the city, and many Dreamfolk especially are talking about it: next month, there's going to be a tournament, based around their Talents. This has been happening for a few years now, it seems -- they used to not start planning until the beginning of June, and oh boy was that a mess, so preliminary work is pushed out to May. People who haven't been studying but have an eye to the prizes are starting to work together and hone their crafts; vendors are beginning to set aside special goods for selling at especially inflated prices. At the same time, Talent study groups start advertising more broadly. These are groups of Dreamfolk (and sometimes Konryu natives with a gift for teaching) that share Talent schools and work together to discover new Talents, and strengthen and advance their abilities. These study groups may be as small as a few members with informal practices to large, highly-organized bodies that give themselves names and team up to support each other during the Talent Tourney (like wearing identical jerseys and facepaint). Some of these groups also have (mostly) friendly rivalries between them. While the study groups exist year-round, the Tourney is when they become most active, and new Dreamfolk may find themselves approached by members who share their Talent school to ask them to join. Note: This event will not have a mod-posted log available for threading. Yet. • AFFINITY RANKS • Remember to check out your character's AFFINITY RANK for the various areas of repute within the city! This month's Affinity Activities can be found LOCATED HERE. • OOC INFO & MOD NOTES • HMD Response/Update/Thanks Thank you to everyone who responded to our game HMD last month! We appreciate the input that was shared and will be taking your comments into account as we move forward. The mods are in the process of reworking some of the Mission mechanics so it will run more smoothly in the future. Some things we'll be honing are having signups and OOC planning available for Missions a week prior to launch, having a set number of spaces available for certain plot aspects where too large a group could become unwieldy, among other tweaking! By popular demand, the "choose your own adventure" style of mission will not be going anywhere! (We like it too!) Regarding requests for a more driven plot and expanded worldbuilding, we have come up with a schedule for both some short-range plot developments (some of which you're seeing the introductions of in the events above!), and also implementing some which we foresee playing out over the next 3-4 months. For worldbuilding specifically, we'll be focusing in short order at making some elements of Aifaran more defined (adding neighbourhoods, more locations, more options for interaction) and on the archipelago itself with fleshing out the topography and inhabitants outside the city's walls. We welcome additional ideas and suggestions in this area for what you'd like to see! Content Opt-Out Comment We've created a Content Opt-Out comment on the Mod Contact page, where players can leave an auto-screened comment regarding sensitive topics that they don't wish to deal with in-game. Please let us know of any problems going forward by replying to that post, or by PMing the mod account, or by emailing the general game gmail, also listed on that page. Private Messages to Journals Additional parts of the Ships in the Night plot will be delivered via PMs to character journals beginning later this month, so please take a moment to check your character journals' privacy settings and ensure that the DW Private Messages - Receive messages from: drop-down box is set to Registered Accounts. This should be the default for journals when they're made anyway, but double-checking will allow PMs to be sent regarding plot points and other communications from the mod journal. Thank you! General Housekeeping RE: Apps We clarified the name section on the application template can include your preferred pronouns if you want that to be available to people. |
Space parasites

The parasites could absolutely be transmitted through ingestion, which could come from handling of food and not knowing one was sick, especially uncooked/unprocessed food.

I'm not exactly planning anything along these lines. I just want to have a better feel for what may develop from this, especially as far as Talents and magics are concerned.
